BAC Chart

The BAC Chart – What It Is and How to Use It
A Blood Alcohol Concentration chart, or BAC Chart, is a simple and straightforward way to estimate how many drinks a person can have before they are considered legally intoxicated. It also indicates at which point driving skills are likely impaired, as well as when your BAC could be potentially fatal.
A person’s BAC level varies based on several factors, including weight and gender. For example, after one drink, a 200-pound man would have a BAC of approximately .02, but a 100-pound woman would have a BAC of approximately .05. While both are still technically under the legal limit, the man in this example would probably experience little to no driving impairment, while the woman would be significantly impaired and potentially suffer legal repercussions.

Subtract .01% for each 40 minutes of drinking.
One drink is 1.25 oz. of 80 proof liquor, 12 oz. of beer, or 5 oz. of table wine.BAC is also affected by time. It takes approximately 40 minutes for your level to drop by .01%. So a 120-pound woman who has just had a drink would have a BAC of .04; but in 40 minutes’ time, provided she does not drink anymore, that would drop to .03.

To calculate your BAC at any given time, go to the appropriate chart — men or women — and find your approximate weight and how many drinks you have had. From there, subtract .01% for every 40 minutes you have gone without a drink. As indicated on the chart, a BAC of .08 or above constitutes legal intoxication. However, anything from .04 to .07, while not above the legal limit, still carries risk of impairment as well as potential criminal penalties.

Above all, please remember that this BAC chart should not be used as an indicator of what you can “get away with.” There are many other potential factors affecting your BAC that the chart does not account for: age, health, emotional condition, how much you’ve eaten, and your personal alcohol tolerance, to name a few. This chart is not a hard and fast way to estimate whether you’re still okay to drive, but rather a guideline for whether you probably shouldn’t.

As indicated on the chart, the only truly safe BAC is .00, and the only truly safe number of drinks to have before driving is none. Please drink responsibly, and if there is any chance that your driving could be impaired, do not get behind the wheel of a vehicle.
